Burg Colmberg: Castle, Hotel, and Restaurant

Staying in a castle has been on my bucket list since we arrived in Germany and now that we are down to our last few months, I knew I had to squeeze it in! You can imagine how thrilled I was to find one that was within a three-hour drive from my house and also 20 minutes outside of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (another site we had yet to visit).

After half a day of perusing Rothenberg in the chilly January air, we made our way to the hotel. We drove all the way up the top of the hill where the castle is situated and unloaded our bags.

Upon walking inside we were greeted by the front desk receptionist to our right and the restaurant was directly in front. Check-in was quick and we were offered reservations at the restaurant for dinner. We accepted, then we were off to our room. As far as we could tell, there was no elevator, so be prepared to go up some stairs.

We booked one night in a double room about a week ahead on booking.com and it was €170 (including breakfast). The room we got was beautiful:

It was even complete with a jetted tub! The hotel has free wifi but like most of our hotel experiences in Europe, it isn’t very high speed. We also had a nice view of the courtyard and the village of Colmberg below us:

After checking out the room we went down to dinner. I have to admit, I was nervous about taking my daughter to the restaurant. It looked to be (like many German restaurants) quite nice and I was concerned how my toddler would handle it, as well as if we would be out of place with a child.

We were greeted right away by the receptionist who showed up to our reserved table in the back. The view from our table was stunning and we could watch the sun set over the snow covered landscape. As beautiful as our view outside was, almost as equal was the “mom view” I got inside. At our table was a high chair, a small fork and spoon, and we were promptly presented with a children’s menu. Be still my mom-heart!

When our waitress took our order she even asked if we wanted our daughter’s food to come out as it was ready instead of waiting for the rest of the meal. It was a total win! I would go back just for how welcome we felt.

My husband ordered venison and their house beer, “Dark Knight” (which is available for purchase to take home at the front desk as well) and I had a steak and cola. My daughter had the Franconian bratwurst and a water. Our plates where probably the two most expensive plates on the menu (I mean, sleeping in a castle deserves some extra pomp!) and our total (excluding gratuity) was about €65. We felt that everything was reasonably priced especially for the great service we received.

The food was absolutely delicious as well!

After a good nights sleep, we woke up to a buffet breakfast that had cold cuts, cheese, fruits, fresh brötchen with jams or honey, cereals with various toppings, and even fresh pretzels with a delicious honey mustard or the usual senf, as well as bratwursts. Also, plenty of coffee and juice!

If we had more time in Germany I would definitely return to Burg Colmberg. The staff was friendly and welcoming, the rooms were comfortable and clean, and the food was delicious! An added bonus was that nearly everyone spoke English.
