In this blog post, we’ll share our experience of visiting this beautiful park, highlighting the various kid-friendly activities and amenities to help you plan your next family adventure.

Adventure Awaits at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park:
Last weekend, we enjoyed visiting the beautiful Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park, a hidden gem in La Quinta, California. Nestled at the base of the majestic Santa Rosa Mountains, this park offers a perfect blend of picturesque scenery, outdoor activities, and serene tranquility. It is about 3.5 hours from Edwards Air Force Base, but the area is absolutely stunning and it makes for a great retreat when you want to chase the sun and warm up when it’s chillier at home.
The Journey Begins
After a scenic drive through the Coachella Valley, we arrived at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park with high expectations. As we entered the park, I was immediately struck by the spectacular view of the turquoise lake surrounded by a vast desert landscape and the towering Santa Rosa Mountains. The park’s 710 acres truly offered a sense of serenity and a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. With our youngest being two and this being his first time camping, we wanted a spot not too far off the beaten path. Lake Cahuilla did not disappoint. We were a mere 12-minute trip to Ralph’s, a large grocery store chain, where we could restock on firewood and snacks. It definitely provided the peace of mind I was looking for.
Kid-Friendly Highlights of Lake Cahuilla:
- Fishing Fun:
One of the main attractions at Lake Cahuilla is the 135-acre reservoir, stocked with catfish, trout, and other freshwater fish. Whether your kids are seasoned anglers or just getting started, this is an excellent opportunity for them to develop their fishing skills. The park provides plenty of shoreline access and even hosts annual events like free youth fishing clinics. While we didn’t try our luck with fishing, we did spend time walking along the lakeshore, admiring the vibrant wildlife and listening to the soothing sound of the water lapping against the shore.
Don’t forget: You’ll need a California fishing license to fish at Lake Cahuilla. They don’t sell them onsite, so be sure to purchase one prior to your trip.
- Hiking and Exploring:
With over five miles of hiking and equestrian trails, Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park offers a fantastic opportunity for families to explore the stunning desert landscape. The trails vary in difficulty, so you can choose the one that best suits your family’s fitness level. The trails meander through diverse ecosystems, offering a chance to spot wildlife such as bighorn sheep, desert tortoises, and various bird species.
Here’s a tip: Look for the fence along the northwest side of the lake. There you’ll find openings with trails leading off into the hills.

- Swimming and Water Fun:
During the warmer months, the park’s swimming pool is a popular spot for families to cool off and enjoy some water fun. Unfortunately, during our visit, the pool was still closed due to Covid-19 restrictions. Additionally, the nearby sandy beach along the lake’s shoreline is perfect for building sandcastles and enjoying a picnic.
Just remember: Lake Cahuilla is actually a reservoir, so there’s no swimming allowed in the lake itself.
- Camping Under the Stars:
Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park offers a variety of camping options, including tent and RV sites, as well as group camping areas and equestrian camping sites. There are also primitive sites available. Camping is a great way to bond with your family and create lasting memories. The park’s primitive campsites come equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. The partial hookup sites also have water spigots, while the full hookup sites additionally contain electricity. All campsites have access to restrooms and coin-op showers, ensuring a comfortable stay for everyone. I only had two complaints about camping at Lake Cahuilla. First, there is only one restroom facility for the RV/tent/primitive campgrounds and it was a bit of a walk from our end for little legs who waited too long! But it was definitely manageable, and the facilities were clean. Second, the campsites are quite close together. I prefer to have a bit more separation between myself and other campers.
Keep in mind while reserving a campsite: Many of the sites are not shaded or only partially shaded, so pack accordingly!
- Playground and Picnic Areas:
Children will love the park’s playground, featuring swings, slides, and climbing structures to keep them entertained. Families can also take advantage of the numerous picnic areas throughout the park, complete with barbecue grills and shaded structures to keep cool during the hot summer months. There is plenty of open green space to run around in as well and with such an expansive space, finding a spot for a bit of solitude is not too hard.
One thing to remember: The play structure is not shaded, so be mindful of hot slides!

Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park is a fantastic destination for families seeking a mix of adventure and relaxation opportunities while not straying too far from civilization. With its stunning scenery, diverse recreational options, and comfortable amenities, this park will surely create lasting memories for your family. Plan your visit today, and let the adventure begin!
